Reliable Electricity Powers Us Forward

Having a reliable supply of electricity is more than just a convenience. It’s a necessity. Our economy—and our way of life—depend on it.  For consumers, reliability means knowing the lights will come on when you flip the switch.  It also means we’re able to power our businesses and keep America’s economy working.  For America’s electric companies, maintaining a high level of reliability requires constant commitment.

Reliability Is a National Priority

The North American electric system is comprised of a complex interconnected network of generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The structure of the electric grid  helps to make reliability possible, but what makes it a reality is the coordination in operations of the electric companies that make up this network.

Electric Reliability Organization

In 2005, Congress approved legislation that established a reliability organization to impose mandatory reliability standards on electric companies. The electric power industry is the only industry with mandatory reliability requirements.

Enhancing the Grid

Electric power companies are working diligently to enhance our nation’s electric grid to improve reliability.  Enhancing and strengthening our grid with smart technologies help consumers to better manage their energy usage. An enhanced grid also enables electric companies to more proactively identify and address problems that may impact our homes and businesses.
