ENERGY WORKFORCE
Powering America: The People Behind Our Energy
Did you know that the electric power industry supports over 7 million America jobs? Investor-owned electric companies are key drivers of job growth in the United States as they build critical energy infrastructure, provide affordable and reliable energy for customers, and strengthen America’s national and economic security.
From supporting skills-development programs to STEM education tracks to resources for veterans, women, youth, and adults interested in energy, electric companies are prioritizing the development of a skilled and competitive workforce. As new technologies drive greater efficiency, energy jobs are becoming increasingly technical, making skilled workers in STEM fields more essential than ever.
Over the next decade, the industry will fill up to 30 million energy jobs. America’s electric companies are engaging with community partnerships in government, labor, schools, and throughout the private sector to:
- Align job training and educational programs with industry needs.
- Develop the next generation of energy professionals.
- Connect communities with long, fulfilling, good-paying careers.
Celebrating Our Workforce
Nearly 250 million Americans depend on investor-owned electric companies and their employees to power their lives. Behind every wall outlet or light switch, there is a dedicated workforce focused on serving millions of customers across the country.
Currently, more than 100,000 electrical lineworkers work to maintain and enhance the grid, often in hazardous conditions and extreme weather, ensuring safe and reliable electricity for homes, businesses, and communities nationwide.
Every year, on July 10, we join the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) to celebrate National Lineworker Appreciation Day, honoring the dedicated workers who keep our nation powered. We also honor our veterans as nearly 1 in 10 energy workers are military veterans, who are uniquely suited for hands-on, mission-oriented careers in the industry.
By investing in people, technology, and infrastructure, America’s energy workforce is helping to build a stronger, more secure, and more affordable energy future for all Americans.
